This entity deflected silver atoms up or down in the Stern-Gerlach experiment. The Biot-Savart law calculates the strength of this (*) field, whose direction around a current-carrying wire is given by the right hand rule. For 10 points -name this field that can align iron filings.
Answer: magnetic field (prompt on "B (field)") Note how the question begins with an interesting, specific clue that rewards students who know a lot about physics (the Stern-Gerlach experiment). The question makes clear from the start what it’s looking for by using the phrase “this entity.” The question then describes some of the things related to the magnetic field, going from more obscure (the Biot-Savart Law) to more well-known (right hand rule) to a “giveaway” mentioning how this field can align iron filings. This river feeds the All-American Canal, which was built in the 1930s. This river was dammed at Glen Canyon to create Lake Powell. This river, which irrigates the (*) Imperial Valley, flows into the Gulf of California. For 10 points - name this river that flows through the Grand Canyon. Answer: Colorado River Again, this question starts out with harder clues and eventually goes to giveaway clues as more of the question is read. The bold part of the question highlights at what parts of the question are still in power, and a correct answer in the bold part of the question gives 15 points instead of 10. Notice how only Colorado is underlined in the correct answer. Due to the question mentioning how it asks for "this river", a correct answer of Colorado would be accepted. |
Only tossup questions are open to both teams, while bonuses are a series of two questions (known as “bonus parts”) directed at the team whose player correctly answered the tossup, and teams can collaborate when answering them (it is highly recommended that the team allows the moderator to finish reading a bonus part before answering). For each bonus, there is one easy and hard part each, but NOT necessarily in that order.
